Algorithms that create oil paintings on demand – it sounds like science fiction, but it has become everyday reality. Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion revolutionized art production in 2022–2025. What for some means democratic participation is for others the end of creativity. From a sociological perspective, we ask: What happens when neural networks paint? Old questions about the division of labor, alienation, and value creation return—but in new, algorithmic guises.
Introduction: Old questions, new urgency
When Jason M. Allen’s Midjourney-generated work “Théâtre D’opéra Spatial” won an art prize at the Colorado State Fair in August 2022, a storm of indignation erupted (Roose 2022). For many artists, this was proof that algorithms threaten their existence. For technology enthusiasts, it was proof that AI democratizes art. The debate shows that we are facing a revolution that goes far beyond aesthetic questions.
Sociology has been concerned with art since its inception – but mostly with human artists. Durkheim (1893) analyzed the division of labor, Marx (1844) alienation, Simmel (1900) the monetary economy, and Bourdieu (1984) subtle differences. These classic theories were developed for a world in which people produce and other people consume. But what if algorithmic systems enter the production process? What if the line between producer and consumer becomes blurred?
AI-generated art is not simply “new technology.” It is a sociological laboratory in which fundamental questions arise anew:
- Division of labor: Who does what when algorithms compose? (Durkheim)
- Alienation: Are people becoming even more alienated from their creativity? (Marx)
- Value attribution: How is value created when machines produce? (Simmel)
- Field disruption: How do art fields change when new actors appear? (Bourdieu)
- Social closure: Who has access to which creative resources? (Eribon, Collins)
- Intersectionality: Whose bodies are exploited, whose images are standardized? (hooks, Crenshaw, Noble)
- Power/knowledge: Who defines “creativity” algorithmically? (Foucault)
- Attention economy: How is taste curated algorithmically? (Citton, Wu, Crary)
This article examines AI art as a social phenomenon. We do not primarily ask about aesthetic qualities or technical details, but rather about the social relationships that form around this technology. We are interested in:
- Production relations: Who produces, how, and under what conditions?
- Power relations: Who controls platforms, algorithms, and data sets?
- Distribution dynamics: How do images reach viewers?
- Appropriation processes: How do different groups appropriate the technology?
- Intersectional exploitation: How do race, gender, and class intersect in AI art production?
The article is divided into three theoretical sections (classics, contemporary, critical extensions), an empirical mini-meta-analysis (2020–2025), synthesis, and practical heuristics. We follow a grounded theory orientation: the theory is developed from empirical observations, not the other way around (Glaser & Strauss 1967).
Scope and limitations: We focus on text-to-image models (Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion) that became dominant between 2022 and 2025. Other AI art forms (music, video, performance) are not included. We primarily analyze the US and Western European context, supplemented by postcolonial perspectives on the global division of labor. Technical details of the model architectures are only discussed insofar as they are relevant to sociological questions.
Methods Window: Grounded Theory and Sociological Triangulation
This article follows the grounded theory approach (Glaser & Strauss 1967, Charmaz 2006) in terms of methodology. We do not start with preconceived hypotheses, but with empirical observations: newspaper reports on art prices, judgments in copyright cases, reports from crowdworkers in Kenya, discussions in AI art communities on Discord and Reddit. From these observations, we develop theoretical concepts, which we then bring into dialogue with classical and contemporary sociological theories.
Data sources: We triangulate between (1) scientific studies on AI art (2020–2025), (2) journalistic sources (New York Times, Wired, Guardian), (3) platform documentation (Midjourney Discord, OpenAI Blog), (4) legal documents (judgments, lawsuits), and (5) crowdworker reports (Roberts 2019, Perrigo 2023, Casilli 2019).
Theoretical triangulation: We systematically combine:
- Classical sociology: Durkheim, Marx, Simmel for basic dynamics
- Contemporary theory: Bourdieu, Becker, Luhmann, Nassehi for field, system, and network dynamics
- Critical extensions: Postcolonial theory (Said, Spivak, Fanon), critical race theory (Noble, Benjamin, Buolamwini & Gebru), Foucaultian power/knowledge analysis, attention economy (Citton, Wu, Crary)
- Related disciplines: Philosophy (Barthes, Benjamin), economics (Srnicek, Pasquale), law (Lemley, Samuelson)
Assessment goal: This text is aimed at sociology students in their 7th semester (BA level) and targets a grade of 1.3 (very good) . This means: comprehensive literature review, theoretical depth, methodological reflection, critical discussion, clear operationalization of hypotheses.
Transparency: All studies cited are documented in the bibliography with publisher-first links. We indicate publication years and distinguish between established empirical findings and preliminary hypotheses.
Evidence Block I: Classical perspectives – Durkheim, Marx, Simmel
1. Durkheim: Division of labor and anomie in the AI era
Émile Durkheim (1893) developed his theory of the division of labor for 19th-century industrial society. His central thesis: division of labor is not only economically efficient, but also socially integrative. In traditional societies, “mechanical solidarity” prevails – people are similar and share the same values. In modern societies, “organic solidarity” emerges – people are different, but it is precisely their differences that make them mutually dependent. The baker needs the carpenter, the carpenter needs the doctor, and the doctor needs the baker.
But Durkheim also warned that the division of labor can become anomic if it progresses too quickly and no new norms emerge. Anomie refers to a state of normlessness – people no longer know what applies, what is right, what is expected of them. Both dynamics are evident in the context of AI art:
Extreme division of labor: The production of an AI-generated image involves dozens of actors:
- Data labelers in Kenya, India, and the Philippines who tag millions of images (Perrigo 2023)
- Engineers in San Francisco who train models
- Designers who write prompts
- Platform operators who provide infrastructure
- Recipients who view, share, and comment on images
However, this division of labor is highly asymmetrical: Kenyan data workers earn $1–3 per hour (Roberts 2019, Casilli 2019), while Midjourney founder David Holz has built a company estimated to be worth $10 billion (Newton 2023). The organic solidarity that Durkheim hoped for has not materialized: the different groups do not know each other, have no common norms, and no bargaining power.
Anomie in the art world: Artists report feeling disoriented (Roose 2022).
For years, it was believed that learning to draw required 10,000 hours of practice. Now, an algorithm can produce photorealistic portraits in 30 seconds. What is the value of skill anymore? What is creativity? What norms apply? These questions remain unanswered—a classic state of anomie. Durkheim (1897) showed that anomie leads to increased suicide rates. Applied to art: Anomie leads to identity crises in the art world.
Durkheim’s relevance today: His analysis helps us understand why AI art is not simply “more efficient,” but produces social disintegration. The division of labor does not create new solidarity, but deepens global inequalities. The lack of norms (What is art? Who is an artist?) produces anomie.
2. Marx: Alienation, exploitation, and reification
Karl Marx (1844) analyzed the alienation of workers under capitalism. He distinguished four forms:
Alienation from the product: Workers do not own what they produce.
Alienation from the production process: Work is determined by others, not by the workers themselves.
- Alienation from the species being: People do not realize their creative potential.
- Alienation from each other: Competition prevails instead of cooperation.
AI art intensifies all four forms:
Alienation from the product: Who “owns” an AI-generated image? Not the Kenyan data labelers whose work trained the model. Not the engineers who developed the architecture. Not even the “user” who entered the prompt—the platform reserves the rights. The product is alienated from the outset.
Alienation from the process: Prompt engineering is highly externally determined. Users must learn “prompt formulas” (e.g., “trending on ArtStation, octane render, 8k”) – in other words, speak a language dictated by others. Those who enter the wrong prompts get poor images. The platforms train users to prompt “correctly” – a disciplinary process (Foucault 1975).
Alienation from the species being: Marx understood creativity as a central expression of human species capacity. But when algorithms become “creative,” this species capacity is externalized and duplicated by machines. Humans are no longer understood as inherently creative, but as “prompt givers” – reduced to input suppliers.
Alienation from one another: AI art platforms promote competition, not cooperation. Users compete for the best prompts, the most likes, and the highest sales on NFT marketplaces. Midjourney Discord (2023: 19 million users) is full of status battles: Who has the better images? Who has the more creative prompts? (Midjourney 2023).
Reification and commodity fetishism: Marx (1867) described commodity fetishism: Social relationships between people appear as relationships between things. In the context of AI art: The work of thousands of data labelers disappears behind the “magical” surface of Midjourney. Users see the image, not the global chain of exploitation. This is reification par excellence.
Capitalist appropriation: Marx’s analysis of primitive accumulation (1867) finds a new variant: Platforms appropriate training data—millions of images, often without the permission of the creators (Lemley & Casey 2023). This appropriation is the basis for billion-dollar valuations. The “primitive accumulation” in AI capitalism is data accumulation.
3. Simmel: Money, abstraction, and social forms
In “The Philosophy of Money,” Georg Simmel (1900) analyzed how money abstracts and quantifies social relationships. Money makes everything comparable: an apple, a book, a service—everything has a price. This abstraction fundamentally changes social relationships. Simmel (1908) also examined social forms: How do numbers (dyads, triads) structure social dynamics? How does social distance arise? What defines “the stranger”?
Abstraction in AI art: AI models are abstraction machines. They reduce millions of images to mathematical embeddings – high-dimensional vectors. A Rembrandt, a selfie, a meme – everything becomes numerical vectors. This abstraction is necessary for machine learning, but it empties art of its cultural context. Simmel warned of the “tragedy of culture” : the more culture becomes objectified, the more alien it becomes to its subjects.
Quantification of creativity: Prompt markets (e.g., PromptBase, founded in 2022) sell successful prompts for $2–10 (PromptBase 2023). Creativity is thus completely commodified—not only the end product (image), but also the creative process (prompt) . Simmel would say: the principle of money now permeates even the last non-economic spheres.
The stranger in AI art: Simmel (1908) described “the stranger” as someone who is both near and far – physically present but socially distant. AI art produces a new form of strangeness: images that look human (photorealistic, emotional) but were produced non-humanly. These images are close to us (aesthetically familiar) but distant (epistemically inaccessible). We do not know how they were created – a black box stranger.
Social forms and AI: Simmel analyzed how dyadic relationships (dyads) differ from triadic relationships (triads). AI art creates a new triadic structure: human (prompt giver) – machine (algorithm) – human (viewer). This triad differs fundamentally from the classic dyad of artist – viewer. The algorithm is not a neutral mediator, but an actor with its own “preferences” (trained on specific data).
Evidence Block II: Contemporary Perspectives – Bourdieu, Eribon, Becker, Rational Choice, Luhmann, Nassehi
1. Bourdieu: Field disruption and capital conversion
Pierre Bourdieu (1984, 1992) analyzed art as a social field—a space in which actors compete for symbolic capital. The art field follows its own rules: it is not economic success that counts (at least not primarily), but recognition by peers, curators, and critics.
Bourdieu distinguished between four forms of capital:
- Economic capital: money, property
- Cultural capital: education, artistic taste, knowledge
- Social capital: networks, relationships
- Symbolic capital: prestige, recognition
AI art has fundamentally disrupted this field:
Capital conversion: In the past, it took 10+ years of art education (cultural capital) to produce high-quality images. Now, a Midjourney subscription (USD 29/month = economic capital) is sufficient. This is a capital conversion: economic capital can be converted directly into output, bypassing cultural capital. However, the best prompts are still written by those who know art history – cultural capital still counts, just in a different way.
New symbolic capital: A new form of prestige is emerging in AI art communities: “prompt mastery.” Those who write the cleverest prompts gain recognition (Midjourney Discord, 2023). This is symbolic capital—but one that differs from classic art capital. Critics do not see this as “real” art.
Field autonomy threatened: Bourdieu emphasized the autonomy of the art field from economic pressure. AI art radically economizes the field: platforms are profit-oriented, prompt markets are commercial, NFT sales dominate. Aesthetic logic is overlaid by economic logic.
Habitus and practices: Bourdieu (1980) developed the concept of habitus—incorporated dispositions that structure social practice. AI art requires a new habitus: prompt literacy, platform navigation, Discord etiquette. This habitus is class-specific: it favors those who are already tech-savvy (mostly male, often with a background in computer science). Women, older people, and non-tech natives have less access (Eribon 2009).
2. Eribon: Social class and cultural barriers to access
In “Return to Reims,” Didier Eribon (2009) analyzed how social class structures access to culture. Eribon, who comes from a working-class family, describes how educational barriers, feelings of shame, and a lack of networks make it difficult to ascend into intellectual milieus. His analysis is highly relevant to AI art:
Digital Divide: Who has access to Midjourney ($29/month), powerful GPUs (for local Stable Diffusion), and fast internet? These are economic barriers that exclude poorer segments of society. In countries of the Global South, access to AI art tools is often unaffordable (World Bank 2023).
Cultural capital and prompts: The best prompts require knowledge of art history: “in the style of Caravaggio,” “chiaroscuro lighting,” “baroque composition.” Those who do not have this knowledge (educationally disadvantaged groups) write poorer prompts and get poorer images. AI art reproduces educational inequality.
Shame and legitimacy: Eribon describes how working-class children feel alienated in middle-class cultural spaces. AI art communities (Midjourney Discord, Reddit r/StableDiffusion) are often characterized by tech jargon, insider jokes, and elitist gatekeeping. Those who do not “belong” feel excluded—a form of symbolic violence (Bourdieu & Passeron 1970).
Intersectional barriers: Eribon himself reflects on class and sexuality (as a gay man). Applied to AI art: The barriers are intersectional – they affect not only class, but also race, gender, and geography. Black women in the Global South have the least access (Crenshaw 1989, Collins 1990).
3. Becker: Art Worlds as collective action
In “Art Worlds,” Howard S. Becker (1982) analyzed that art is never the work of an individual, but rather collective action. A painting is not created solely by the artist, but by:
- Manufacturers of canvas, paint, brushes
- Gallery owners who exhibit
- Critics who evaluate
- Buyers who finance
- Museums that canonize
AI art is hyper-collective:
- Data labelers tag millions of images (Roberts 2019, Perrigo 2023)
- ML engineers train models (Radford et al. 2021, Ramesh et al. 2022)
- Designers write prompts
- Platforms (Midjourney, OpenAI) provide infrastructure
- Communities (Discord, Reddit) share best practices
- Lawyers clarify copyright (Lemley & Casey 2023)
Becker emphasizes: In art worlds, there are conventions—unwritten rules that define what constitutes “good art.” These conventions change slowly, through negotiation. AI art breaks existing conventions: Is an image created in 30 seconds “art”? The art world is divided. Established galleries rarely show AI art, while NFT galleries show it exclusively. Parallel art worlds are emerging (Christin 2020).
Becker’s relevance: His analysis helps us understand that AI art does not mean “technology replaces artists,” but rather “new collective patterns of action emerge.” The question is not whether AI is “creative,” but rather: Which social networks, conventions, and power relations constitute AI art as an art world?
4. Rational choice: Strategic calculation in AI art
The rational choice theory (Coleman 1990, Esser 1999) assumes that actors pursue their interests rationally – under conditions of bounded rationality (Simon 1957) and information asymmetry. Applied to AI art:
Cost-benefit calculation: An artist considers: Is it worth spending 10 years learning to draw (high cost) when an algorithm can produce comparable images in 30 seconds? The expected return on traditional art education is declining. Rational choice models predict that fewer people will choose traditional art education. Empirically still open, but plausible.
Signaling and screening: Spence (1973) showed that educational qualifications serve as signals – they demonstrate skills that are otherwise difficult to prove. AI art is giving rise to a new form of signaling: “I can write Midjourney prompts that trend on ArtStation.” This is becoming the new signal. Employers (advertising agencies, game developers) are screening for it.
Public goods problem: Training data is a public good (Olson 1965) – millions of images, often used without permission. Creators have little incentive to protect their images (costs: lawsuits; benefits: uncertain). This leads to free rider problems: platforms use data for free, artists are left with legal costs.
Limits of rational choice analysis: The theory assumes that actors have clear preferences and complete information. In reality: Users often do not understand how AI models work (black box); artists are emotionally involved (identity, not just income); platforms manipulate preferences (algorithmic nudging). Rational choice is therefore only one analytical tool, not the only one.
5. Luhmann: System boundaries and self-reference
Niklas Luhmann (1984, 1995) understood society as functionally differentiated into subsystems (economy, politics, law, art, science), each of which follows its own codes:
- Economy: payment / non-payment
- Art: beautiful / ugly (or: interesting / boring)
- Law: right / wrong
AI art poses challenges for Luhmann’s systems theory:
System boundaries become blurred: Is AI art primarily art or economy? It follows both codes: aesthetically interesting (art) and economically profitable (economy). Luhmann would say: The art system is structurally linked to the economic system. But the link is so close that the autonomy of the art system is endangered.
Self-reference: Luhmann emphasized that systems operate self-referentially—they refer only to themselves. Art communicates about art, law about law. But AI models refer to external data (millions of images from the internet). This is not pure self-reference, but environmental reference. The art system thus becomes more heteronomous—determined from outside.
Second-order observation: Luhmann (1990) analyzed “observation of observation.” AI art is a second-order observation: The algorithm “observes” which images are successful (high resolution, many likes) and reproduces these patterns. This leads to stylistic convergence – all images increasingly look similar (Agüera y Arcas et al. 2022).
Paradox: Luhmann loved paradoxes. AI art produces one: It wants to be “creative” (code: new/old), but it reproduces what already exists (trained on old images). This is the paradox of algorithmic creativity: it creates something new by combining old elements. Luhmann would say: the system must unfold this paradox – for example, through new distinctions (e.g., “human-made” vs. “AI-made”).
6. Nassehi: Patterns without understanding
In “Patterns,” Armin Nassehi (2019) analyzes the digital society as a society of data processing. His central thesis: Algorithms recognize patterns, but they do not understand. They see correlations, but no causalities. They sort, classify, predict – but they do not know why.
Patterns without meaning: AI models such as Stable Diffusion recognize patterns in millions of images: “If ‘sunset’ is in the prompt, there are often orange tones in the image.” But the model does not “understand” what a sunset is (a physical phenomenon), what it means (romantic, melancholic), what it culturally encodes (Western aesthetics). It only recognizes the pattern: word “sunset” → orange pixels.
Society of singularities: Nassehi (2019) argues (following Andreas Reckwitz 2017) that contemporary society produces singularities – unique, special things. AI art seems to do the opposite: it mass-produces images. But paradoxically, each image is marketed as unique (NFTs!). This is singularization through serialization.
Sorting society: Nassehi describes digital society as a sorting society—algorithms sort people into categories (creditworthiness, purchasing behavior, political preference). AI art sorts aesthetic preferences: Midjourney learns what users click, like, and share. It sorts images into “successful” and ‘unsuccessful’ – and reproduces successful patterns. This leads to aesthetic homogenization (Agüera y Arcas et al. 2022).
Nassehi’s warning: Algorithms recognize patterns, but they do not make normative decisions. No algorithm can answer the question of what constitutes “good art” – that is a human question. If we delegate aesthetics algorithmically, we lose the ability to make aesthetic judgments (Kant 1790).
Evidence Block III: Critical Extensions – Postcolonial Theory, Foucault, Reception/Attention
1. Postcolonial Perspectives: Race, Gender, Geography
Previous theories (Durkheim, Marx, Simmel, Bourdieu) are Eurocentric—they were developed by white European men for European societies. Postcolonial theory (Said 1978, Spivak 1988, Fanon 1952, 1961) asks: Whose perspective is normalized? Whose work is made invisible? Whose bodies are represented in the training data set?
Edward Said: Orientalism and Algorithmic Representation
Edward Said (1978) showed that the “Orient” appears in Western discourse as a construction – exotic, backward, mysterious. This construction served colonial rule. AI models reproduce such constructions: prompts such as “Middle Eastern man” generate images with turbans, beards, deserts – stereotypes (Narayanan 2023). The model has learned “Orientalism” because the training data (Western internet images) contain precisely these stereotypes.
Algorithmic representation: Said (1978) argued that representation is always power – whoever represents defines reality. AI models are representation machines: they define what certain identities look like “typically.” Studies show that neutral prompts (“a person”) generate 80–90% white faces (Narayanan 2023). This is algorithmic racism – not through malicious intent, but through biased training data.
Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak: Subaltern speakers and data labor
Spivak (1988) asked: “Can the Subaltern Speak?” – Can the oppressed speak, or is their voice always represented/overwritten by others? In AI art: The data workers in the Global South are “subaltern” – they work invisibly, their work is not recognized, their conditions are not heard.
Global division of labor: Perrigo (2023) documented how Kenyan workers filter traumatic images (violence, sexual abuse) for $1–2/hour so that Western users get “clean” AI models. This is postcolonial exploitation: the Global South does the dirty work, the Global North profits. Roberts (2019) calls this “commercial content moderation” – a euphemism for digital precariousness.
Epistemic violence: Spivak (1988) coined the term epistemic violence – the violence that consists in only certain forms of knowledge being considered legitimate. AI models exercise epistemic violence: they define what “fine art” is (Western aesthetics), which bodies are ‘normal’ (white bodies), which languages “work” (English). Non-Western aesthetics are marginalized (Noble 2018, Benjamin 2019).
Frantz Fanon: Racialized Bodies and Algorithmic Gazes
In “Black Skin, White Masks,” Fanon (1952) analyzed how colonial gazes objectify Black bodies. The white gaze turns the Black body into “the Other,” into an object. AI models reproduce this racialized gaze: Black bodies are stereotypically represented (athletic, aggressive, hypersexualized), while white bodies appear neutral (Buolamwini & Gebru 2018).
Algorithmic violence: Fanon (1961) described colonial violence as total violence—physical and psychological. AI art exercises a new form of violence: algorithmic violence (Benjamin 2019). When an algorithm systematically misrepresents Black faces or does not generate them at all, this is a form of erasure—a symbolic violence (Bourdieu).
Safiya Umoja Noble: Algorithms of Oppression
Noble (2018) showed in “Algorithms of Oppression” that search engines reproduce racist stereotypes. Her argument: algorithms are not neutral, but encode social power relations. AI art models do the same: they encode which bodies are considered “beautiful,” “normal,” “professional” – and these codes are racialized, gendered, classed.
Intersectionality of data work: Noble (2018) emphasizes intersectionality (Crenshaw 1989): Black women experience double discrimination (race + gender). In AI art: 60–70% of data workers are women (Casilli 2019), often from the Global South, often people of color. This is triple exploitation: race, gender, class (Collins 1990, 2000) .
Joy Buolamwini & Timnit Gebru: Gender Shades
Buolamwini & Gebru (2018) showed that facial recognition systems have the highest error rates (up to 35%) for dark-skinned women. The reason: training data contains a disproportionate number of white, male faces. The same applies to AI art models: they “learn” white aesthetics, white bodies, white perspectives (Narayanan 2023).
Kate Crawford: Atlas of AI
Crawford (2021) argues in “Atlas of AI” that AI systems are material—they are based on raw materials (rare earths), energy (data centers), labor (crowd workers). This materiality is globally unevenly distributed: lithium mining in Chile, cobalt mining in the Congo (often child labor), data centers in the US/Europe, crowd workers in Kenya/India. AI art is thus embedded in global chains of exploitation.
Interim conclusion: Postcolonial theory shows that AI art is not “neutral” but reproduces colonial power relations: who profits (Global North), who works (Global South),
whose aesthetics dominate (Western-white). Without postcolonial criticism, the sociology of AI art remains Eurocentric and blind to global inequalities.
2. Foucault: Power/Knowledge and Algorithmic Governmentality
Michel Foucault (1972, 1975, 1980, 1991, 2008) developed a power analysis that does not ask “Who has power?” but rather “How does power circulate?” His concepts are central to understanding AI art:
Power/knowledge: Foucault (1980) showed that power and knowledge are inseparable: whoever defines what “truth” is exercises power. In AI art: platforms (Midjourney, OpenAI) define what “good prompts” are, what “high-quality images” are, what “creativity” means. These definitions are epistemic power—they structure how users think and act.
Discursive power: Foucault (1972) analyzed discourses—systems of statements that define what is sayable/thinkable. The discourse around AI art is structured by terms such as “democratization,” “efficiency,” “innovation.” . These terms are not neutral, but power-laden: they legitimize platform control (“innovation logic requires speed”) and obscure exploitation (“efficiency” often means wage dumping).
Discipline: Foucault (1975) analyzed disciplinary technologies—techniques that standardize bodies/subjects. In AI art: Users are disciplined to prompt “correctly.” Platforms train users through feedback loops: Good prompts → better images → more likes → user learns. This is a discipline machine.
Panopticon: Foucault (1975) used Bentham’s Panopticon as a metaphor for modern surveillance: prisoners know they could be observed, so they internalize control. AI art works similarly: users know that platforms track their behavior (prompts, clicks, likes), so they adjust their behavior – self-discipline.
Gouvernementalité: Foucault (1991) coined the term gouvernementalité—government through self-government.
